Kochi, Aug 07: The first arrest in Goods and Services Tax (GST) was made late on Monday when intelligence officials nabbed a plywood dealer from Perumbavoor, near Kochi, for evading tax to the tune of over Rs 130 crore.
Nishad had been evading police net for the last few days and was nabbed from his residence.
The officials had been closely watching his deals and detected the fraud on July 27. He used to sell plywood misusing input tax credit rules at cheap rates which made his unit much sought-after.
Intelligence sleuths seized fake bills of products brought from Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Salem and Coimbatore. He used bills of defunct and non-existent companies which helped in customers getting products without factoring in the tax component.
