The National Investigation Agency(NIA) has stepped in to probe the terror angle and links of the accused in the Thodupuzha Newman College professor hand-chopping case in 2010 with the murder of Students Federation of India (SFI) leader Abhimanyu outside Maharaja’s College Ernakulam late on Sunday night.
Two more persons were arrested on Thursday, taking the number of those held to six. Meanwhile, the Police have already identified the killer and expected to nab him soon. All those arrested had links with Campus Front of India, the student’s arm of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI).
Director General of Police Loknath Behra told mediapersons in Kochi that the government was seeking opinion of law experts to bring the case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act(UAPA). Abhimanyu (20), a BSc second-year degree student from Vattavada in Idukki district, was stabbed to death allegedly by CFI activists after a scuffle over wall graffiti to welcome the batch of new students.
As part of its investigation, NIA would look into whether those involved in the chopping of Prof TJ Joseph on July 4, 2010, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of a community through a question paper he had set, had any links with Abhimanyu’s murder which incidentally happened on the hand-chopping anniversary. Thirteen persons were convicted, all activists of the Popular Front of India. The agency would also look into whether those involved in the college campus murder were associated with the hand-chopping case.
Behra said the conspiracy angle to the campus murder would be probed as most involved came from outside. The arrest of the key accused would happen soon. Separately, Abhimanyu’s father has alleged that there was a conspiracy since his son received several calls to rush to the college. He was at home and was to have gone back to college only on Monday. But since there were many phone calls asking him to return to college, Abhimanyu rushed to the college hostel in a lorry carrying vegetables. In half an hour after reaching the hostel, he went out after there was a scuffle over space for wall writings between SFI and PFI. One of the CFI activists contacted others outside who arrived at the scene and murdered Abhimanyu and injured another student.
