Agency News

Bengaluru, Nov 13 : Dissident Congress and JDS MLAs in Karnataka on Wednesday welcomed the Supreme Court's verdict allowing them to contest the December 5 Assembly polls.

Hailing the verdict, former minister and one of the disqualified lawmakers H Vishwanath said, ''We will fight the by-elections as the court had disapproved the Speaker's order barring us from fighting".

B C Patil, another disqualified MLA from Hirekerur Assembly segment while welcoming the verdict, said that "Supreme Court's verdict had upheld our constitutional right to contest elections".

The Apex court upheld the decision of the former Assembly Speaker to disqualify the Karnataka MLAs. However, it added the Speaker had overstepped his authority in barring MLAs to contest election till the end of the current term of the Assembly. Meanwhile, the State BJP president Nalin Kumar Kateel had convened a core committee meeting to finalise party's candidates for the December bypolls to fill vacancies in the House.

The Opposition Congress had finalised its candidates for seven seats and likely to announce its candidates in a day or two. The ECI had already announced the by-election dates and the process of filing nominations had already started. (UNI)
