Belagavi, Oct 25 : Heavy rains continued on Friday in many places of north Karnataka region, including Belagavi city, Khanapur, Chikkodi, Gokak and other places in the district. Heavy rain also disturbed the three-day Kittur Utsav-2019 in the district, which started on October 23. Many outdoor events, mainly men and women wrestling events, were cancelled.
Every year, thousands of people visit Kittur for the wrestling event, but due to rain, attendance was low this time. On the last day of the festival, indoor events, including cultural programmes, were going on.
The water was flowing above danger level from Krishna, Ghataprabha,Vedganga and Dudganga rivers. Huge amount of water was coming to Navilutirth Dam in Savadatti, which was releasing it.
According to official sources, due to heavy rains in Khanapur and upstream catchment of Malaprabha river, the outflow to Malaprabha river was being increased from the present 5000 cusecs to 8000 cusecs gradually. This discharge may be further increased in evening, depending on the intensity of rain and inflow. The district administration has taken all necessary precautions to face any situation, they added.
