Karnataka CM Yediyurappa offers puja to river Cauvery

Mandya, Aug 29 : Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yadiyurappa, who offered Puja at Krishnaraja Sagar Reservoir (KRS) on Thursday, said bountiful rain had brought relief to the people of Karnataka as well as Tamil Nadu and described the current situation as “nature’s solution” to the problems faced by the two States over sharing of waters.
Speaking on the occasion, Yediyurappa said that the four major dams built across river Cauvery, including KRS, have reached their Full Reservoir Level (FRL) for the second successive year after eight years of shortage, bringing much-needed delight to farmers and residents. In all 112 Tmc ft of water stored in these dams.

"We have also released sufficient water to Tamil Nadu as per direction by the tribunal". he added. Yediyurappa asked the district authorities to fill up all the tanks in the Cauvery basin so that the groundwater charged. Stating that the government has been facing severe challenges following one of the worst flood situations in as many as 22 districts, besides in some districts drought situation is prevailing. The State government has already taken up relief works. Even the expert committee from the Centre have visited the flood affected areas and have submitted their report. "We are expecting good news from the union government towards releasing more funds for the flood relief and rehabilitation works,'' he added.

Referring to beautification of Brindavan Gardens in KRS to attract more Tourists, he said the government will take up the necessary steps in this direction and asked the Deputy Commissioner, Mandya to submit a detailed project report in this regard.

Yediyurappa assured revival of the Pandavapura Sugar factory and Mandya My Sugar factories. He asked the Deputy Commissioner to send a detailed report.

The tradition of offering ‘Bagina’ was set by R Gundu Rao who was the Chief Minister in 1983 and it was followed by other Chief Ministers. Even former C M Siddharamaiah had offered ‘bagina’ in 2014 when the Dam reached its full capacity. Interestingly, only late Ramakrishna Hegde did not offer ‘Bagina during his tenure as Chief Minister.
