Thanjavur, May 17: Members of the Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) on Thursday burnt the effigy of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan at Gandhi Park in Kumbakonam near here to protest against his controversial “Hindu extremist” remarks.
The protesters shouted slogans against the actor-turned-politician before setting the effigy on fire. Police rushed to the spot and doused the fire.Kumbakonam East police registered a case and arrested 11 activists of the HMK for burning the effigy.
Mr Haasan has been facing flak from the BJP and Sangh Parivar outfits for his remarks that the “first extremist of Independent India was a Hindu,” during an election campaign in Karur district on Sunday. Foot wears, eggs and stones were hurled by BJP men against Mr.Haasan during his by-election campaigns at Tirupparankundram and Aravakkurichi assembly constituencies for his remarks. (UNI)
