Kalaburagi, Apr 12: Akhil Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha President and former Karnataka Minister Shamanur Shivashankarappa today said that the demand for a separate Lingayat religion was “a closed chapter” and there is no difference of opinion on the issue.

Addressing a Press Conference here on Friday, he said that "there is difference between Veerashaiva and Lingayat sects. Both are one. Any attempt to divide them is wrong." He said that Swamiji's are main cause of this conflict that was raked up during 2014 Assembly election in the State. The Swamijis are separate from politics and the issue has vanished from the Society.

Shivashankarappa said that there has been no difference between the two in the last 110 years. Last year, somehow it was raked up but it disappeared as suddenly as it had emerged. It is sad that some Seers are trying to create this divide. They say Lingayat is different from Veerashaiva. How can this be? We know that there is no difference. There may be some differences in minor rituals. To reduce this difference, we should initiate marriages between members of the two groups and stay united for the cause of the community. The Mahasabha was apolitical and had members from all parties".

Shivashankarappa came down heavily against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that Modi is behaving like Hitler and misusing Income tax and other autonomous bodies in the country. He said that the Lok Sabha election, the Congress- JD (S) Coalition government will remain in the State but Yeddyurappa will definitely go out of the politics". (UNI)
