Mangaluru, Apr 1: The people of port city of Mangaluru and those living in Dakshina Kannada district wanted a change and this was the reason Congress party had fielded a young candidate in Mithun Rai, Karnataka Minister D K Shivakumar said here today.
Speaking to reporters here on Monday at the airport before launching election campaign in support of Rai, he said Congress remained strong in coastal districts and the party was winning all three seats of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi-Chikmagaluru and Canara (Uttara Kannada) segments.
While Congress is defending its seat in DK, the other two segments have remained stronghold of the BJP with Union Minister Anant Kumar Hegde had won the seat five times in a row.
On BJP President Amit Shah visiting Bangaluru Rural segment on Tuesday which is represented by his brother D K Suresh, he said Congress was not scared of Mr Shah or any other BJP leader. ‘’We will do our work and BJP will do its work. We are confident of retaining this segment.’’
Shivakumar was received at the airport by District Congress Committee President Harish Kumar, Mithun Rai and former legislator J R Lobo. (UNI)
