Bengaluru, Mar 20: Silver Medal winning high jumper of Paralympic games, Girish Gowda, was appointed as Karnataka Lok Sabha Election Ambassador for the second time, State Chief Election Officer Sanjiv Kumar said on Wednesday.
Addressing a press conference here, he said that Mr Girish Gowda had done tremendous job during 2018 Assembly election and hence he was appointed as Ambassador for the second time. He created awareness among the physically disabled about the need for exercising their franchise.
Girish N Gowda, who was born with a disability in the left leg, is Paralympic high jumper from India. He represented India in the 2012 Summer Paralympic games held in London in the men's high jump F-42 category and won the silver medal in the finals with a jump of 1.74 meters using scissors technique. He became the first Indian to win a medal at that event and the 8th Indian to win a medal at the Paralympics.
Stating that special facilities were made for physically disabled, Mr Kumar said that there are 4,03,907 physically disabled enrolled in the voters list and 35,739 polling booths were set up for them.
He said that 35,739 Wheel Chairs, 41,669 Magnifying Glass, 2,213 Sign Language speaking staff, 31,515 Assistants will provided in polling booths.
He said that for the first time Posters in Braille language will be put up in front of Polling Booths to help blind voters.UNI
