Sumalatha Ambareesh may contest as Independent candidate in Mandya

Bengaluru, Mar 14: Film actor turned Politician Sumalatha Ambareesh, wife of former Karnataka Minister late M H Ambareesh, may contest as Independent candidate from Mandya as Congress has left the seat to its coalition partner JDS and her effort to get the ticket went in vain.

She has already started touring the constituency and vowing to fulfill the wishes of her late husband and serve the people. Sumalatha Ambareesh may take on Nikhil Kumaraswamy, son of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and grand son of JDS National President and former Prime Minister H D Devegowda. According to KPCC sources, the decision of the party conceding the Mandya Lok Sabha seat to the JD(S) would be conveyed to Sumalatha, who was keen to get the party ticket from Mandya, once represented by her husband Ambharish.

Sumalatha, who has determined to contest from the Mandya is likely to contest as Independent candidate. She has already started touring the constituency and vowing to fulfill the wishes of her late husband and serve the people.

Apart from riding on the Sympathy wave, she is eyeing on encashing the discontent brewing in both the Congress and the JD(S) parties. While the Congress leaders are upset for conceding the Mandya Lok Sabha seat to JD(S) and expressed their resentment on the issue, the JD(S) workers also reportedly were not happy for denying the ticket to the sitting member Shivarame Gowda to another member of the Devegowda family. Sumalatha, who is making whirlwind tour, is likely to seek the support of the BJP for her campaign against the JD(S).

Speaking to newsmen, the State BJP President B S Yeddyurappa said that his party is yet to take decision on extending support to Sumalatha. “A Final decision would be taken by the Central party leaders on Saturday” he added. (UNI)
