Kickstarting a political row, Karnataka PWD Minister HD Revanna made a sexist remark against actor and politician Sumalatha Ambareesh.
While speaking to media in New Delhi, HD Revanna, who is also Chief Minister Kumaraswamy's older brother, said, “It’s not even been a month since her husband died and instead of grieving, she is already displaying political ambitions and is saying she wants to contest elections. See what level they have stooped to.”
Revanna added that the Mandya seat was for a JD(S) candidate and in order to fight Sumalatha, the JD(S) had no choice but pick Nikhil Gowda (CM Kumaraswamy's son) to contest from Mandya as Sumalatha was adamant that she would not contest from any other segment. “We were planning on fielding one of our workers from Mandya but she said she will contest only from Mandya. So, we changed our plan and decided to bring in Nikhil,” Revanna added. Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Kumaraswamy's candidacy from Mandya, JD(S)'s stronghold, was finalised during a dinner meet between CM HD Kumaraswamy and JD(S) leaders on Thursday.
Sumalatha Ambareesh, who is aspiring to make political debut in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, turned a deaf ear to PWD Minister HD Revanna's derogatory remarks against her. Reacting to Revanna's remarks, Sumalatha said, "Nobody should be making such comments on any day against women." She added that his comments are impertinent to her." n a derogatory remark against Sumalatha, PWD Minister HD Revanna said, Sumalatha entered politics just months after her husband's death."
Oppostion BJP was quick to attack HD Revanna for teh remark.
BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje defended Sumalatha Ambareesh, saying HD Revanna should apologise to Sumalatha for his derogatory remarks. She added that Sumalatha is Mandya's daughter and has every right to serve the people.
