Bengaluru: Late actor Ambareesh’s wife Sumalatha said that she would contest from Mandya if the Congress were to field a candidate from the seat.
For the last many months, the fight between the Congress and Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) has intensified over the Mandya constituency in the backdrop of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Sumalatha’s firm comment came close on the heels of the announcement of Nikhil Gowda, son of Chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, that he will contest from Mandy Lok Sabha seat for JD(S).
Speculations about Sumalatha contesting the 2019 elections have been doing the rounds ever since the death of her husband actor-politician Ambareesh few months back. Ambareesh had been a Madya MP for three terms (1998 to 2009) and MLA from 2013 to 2018. He was also a minister in the Congress-led UPA government. However, citing bad health, he had refused to contest or campaign for the Congress in the 2018 assembly elections.
Meanwhile, firming up her mind for contesting from Mandya, Sumalatha, who was undecided few days back, said: “The seat-sharing issue is complex. But the parties have to resolve that. I will wait for their decision. I am an aspirant. People want me to contest,” she added. It is believed that a coordination committee meeting of the Congress-JDS will sort out the issue soon.
