In a big setback for BJP, Congress-JD(S) coalition has swept the Karnataka Bypoll elections by winning four seats out of five.
As a face saving solace, only Shivamogga constituency stood with BJP Chief Yeddyurappa. Congress-JDS combine could pull brutal victories in Mandya, Ballari, Ramanagara and Jhamkhandi constituencies.
In Ramanagara constituency, the victory of JD(S) candidate Anitha Kumaraswamy, wife of Karnataka CM Kumaraswamy, was a pre-destined one as the BJP candidate L Chandrasekhar retired from the contest few days before the polling. Anitha won by around 73,000 votes here.
At the end of 17th round of counting in Mandya, LR Shivarame Gowda of the JD(S) has polled 5,50,126 votes against Siddaramaiah of the BJP who secured 2,36,033 votes. Ugrappa goes to brutal majority of 1.7 lakh votes in Ballari. VS Ugrappa of the Congress is leading by a mammoth 1,74,294 votes after 12 rounds of counting in Ballari.
It is considered as a big setback for the BJP as its candidate J Shantha is the sister of party strongman B Sriramulu. The result is totally unexpected as Shantha is trailing by a huge margin. Ugrappa also breaks the record set by Sonia Gandhi and Sriramulu in previous LS elections.
Congress candidate Anand Nayamgouda expects victory at Jamkhandi. After the completion of 9 rounds of counting, he is leading by 35,000 votes.
Standing with BJP, Shivamogga constituency has finally saved the face of BJP Chief Yeddyurappa. After eleven rounds of counting in the Shivamogga Lok Sabha seat, BJP Chief’s son BY Raghavendra is leading by 36, 467 votes over his JDS rival Madhu Bangarappa.
