Elephant ‘Rowdy Ranga’ killed as a bus dashes against it at Nagarahole Park

Madikeri, Oct 8: In a tragic incident a 60 year-old elephant nick named as Rowdy Ranga was killed when a private bus dashed against it at Mathigodu elephant camp in the Nagarahole National Park in the wee hours of Monday.

The elephant was supposed to leave for Mysuru in a couple of days to participate in the Dasara festivities as substitute.

Forest officials said that the Elephant was standing on the road when a private bus from Kerala, bound for Bengaluru dashed against it. Following the accident the elephant back bone was broken and died on the spot.

The tusker Ranga's hostile behaviour- be it raiding agricultural fields or getting into conflict with humans- in the past had earned him the prefix 'rowdy'. 'Rowdy Ranga' was captured three years back near Ramanagara and brought to the camp and was tamed.

Officials said usually the elephant was let free during the night.
Forest officials filed complaint with the police and case been registered under Wildlife Act.
