Ranchi, Sep 4: Central General Secretary and former cabinet minister of Jharkhand were today arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau in connection with the national games scam.
The state government had on August 24th granted the permission to the ACB to run the case against the then Sports Minister Bandhu Tirkey under whose tenure the 34th National Games were held in Ranchi and five others including working president of the games organising committee RK Anand.
The arrest of Bandhu Tirkey is the third one in connection with the scam as earlier two others SM Hashmi and PC Mishra were arrested while another accused Madhukant Pathak surrendered before the court.
Mr Tirkey had approached the high court and had filed the anticipatory bail petition to prevent himself from being arrested but the court rejected his plea. Earlier a lower court had also rejected his bail plea following which the investigating agency swung into action and finally arrested Bandhu.
The 34th National Games were scheduled to be held in the state in the year 2007 but as preparations were incomplete the games were held in the year 2011. Post the conduct of the games many irregularities in purchase of sports items and award of contracts surfaced causing a loss of Rs 29 crore to the state government after which a probe, in this case, was ordered.
