Agency News

Ranchi, Jul 24: The legislators of the JMM led by Leader of Opposition Hemant Soren and those of the Congress under Sukhdeo Bhagat protested in favour of their separate demands. The JMM MLAs who also carried placards indulged in slogan shouting against the amendments proposed in the Indian Forest Act (1927). Later, speaking to reporters Mr Soren said the state government was sitting idle over the amendments proposed in the act.

He said Jharkhand was the land of forests and rivers and according to the draft the forest officials have also been given the power to shoot and no action can be taken against them. Mr Soren said that his party along with tribal outfits across the country had earlier also opposed the amendments due to which a stay was put on it by the Supreme Court in February. However , once again the government was attempting to make amendments in it which will be not accepted by his party.

On the other hand, Congress MLA Sukhdeo Bhagat asserted that the state government fulfilled the demand of giving status to Sarna religious code. He said that there are 70 lakh Sarna followers in the state whose rights cannot be overlooked.
Mr Bhagat said that the Chief Minister had also given an assurance in this regard in the house and also while campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls, and now the time has come that he fulfilled his promise and it should not just remain an election gimmick.UNI
