Srinagar, Jun 10 : Two militants were killed by security forces in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Shopian on Wednesday, official sources said. Meanwhile, mobile internet service has been suspended in the area to prevent rumours. With these killings a total of 24 militants were killed in different encounters during the past two weeks.
They said Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police, Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and CRPF launched a joint CASO at village Sugoo in Shopian following a tip off about the presence of militants in the wee hours today. After sealing all exit points, security forces launched house-to-house search, they said. However, when the troops were moving towards a particular area in the village, militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons, source said adding security forces also retaliated and in the ensuing gun fight two militants were killed.
A police spokesman said the operation was going on when the reports last came in. Meanwhile, additional security forces and police have been deployed in the adjacent areas to prevent any demonstration. (UNI)
