MI J&K with Mumbai Police nab callers seeking info on defence installations

Jammu, Feb 8: In a major breakthrough, Military Intelligence of Jammu and Kashmir in assistance with Mumbai Police cracked the nexus and nabbed a group of callers seeking information on vital defence installations from army personnel.

“In the month of September, defence persons received calls from suspicious numbers, seeking information related to important defence installations,” reliable sources here said on Saturday. They said that the callers posed fictitious identity and the involvement of ISI was suspected following which further investigation was carried out by the Military Intelligence along with Mumbai Police that revealed few illegal VoIP exchanges at Noida and Kerala, which route calls incoming from Pakistan to local numbers, which were then used to extract information from defence persons.

“Based on this Mumbai Police carried out joint operation with Military intelligence on February 6,” sources here said and added, “a total of two functional SIM boxes were recovered with 100 slots each and approxiately 200 SIM cards, along with two routers, three modems, antennas, batteries and connectors and from Noida, Uttar Pradesh and Changaramukulam in Kerala”. “During the above raid, one accused has been arrested from Changermakulam, Kerala,” sources added and said that the exchanges which converted international voice calls originating from Pakistan into local GSM calls using the Chinese SIM Boxes (boxes fitted with GSM SIM cards of local cellular service providers) have also been busted in a police raid.

“These SIM boxes also used dynamic IMEI system, which made them difficult to be tracked and this system is declared illegal by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India,” they asserted. Sources also added that more arrests are likely to be made in this connection in the near future as they might also be linked to compromising the country’s internal security while the crime has been registered the investigation has been forwarded to the Crime Branch.
