Fresh snowfall in Srinagar disrupts normal life

Agency News

Srinagar, Jan 29: The summer capital, Srinagar, turned white due to fresh snowfall since early morning on Wednesday, the last day of 40-day-long “Chalai-Kalan”, the severest period of winter which commenced from December 21 last year.

“Chilai Kalan” will be followed by 20-day-long “Chilai Khurd” and 10-day-long “Chilai Bacha” in the valley, where people are facing frequent power failure, coupled with bad roads.

During this Chilai Kalan, Srinagar received heavy snowfall, breaking about 30 year old record. Roof and tree tops, besides open fields and vehicle roofs had turned white when people woke up this morning in Srinagar, resulting in further chilly conditions disrupting normal life.

All hills surrounding Srinagar also received fresh snowfall, clearly visible from civil lines and Boulevard and Dal Lake.

Due to snowfall, people remained indoors and started normal activities only after 1000 hrs. Very less number of vehicles, mostly private, were seen on the roads. However, the drivers were driving very slowly due to slippery road conditions.

Shops and business establishments opened very late due to chilly weather conditions.

However, shops selling “Hareesa”, which is made with meat and sold in winter only, witnessed heavy rush of customers this morning.

However, despite snow and chilly conditions, students, including girls, were seen marching towards their respective tuition and coaching centers in uptown and downtown. (UNI)
