Soldier dies, 5 rescued after snow avalanche hit post in Kupwara

Srinagar, Jan 15 : A soldier was killed while five others were rescued after a snow avalanche hit a forward post in Tangdhar sector in the frontier district of Kupwara last night, official sources said on Wednesday.

With this, six soldiers and five civilians, including three members of a family, were killed and several dozen houses, cowsheds and other structures were damaged so far in the snow avalanches in Kashmir valley during the past 36 hours. Sources said that six soldiers came under a huge snow avalanche in Tangdhar sector in Kupwara last night.

However, they said troops in the nearby posts and camp immediately launched a rescue operation, adding all the soldiers were rescued and admitted to hospital, where one of them succumbed.

The authorities have issued avalanche warning in higher reaches and appealed to people to remain indoors. "People are also requested not to venture in avalanche prone areas," they said, adding in case of any emergency extra precautionary measure should be taken or local authorities should be contacted.

Four soldiers lost their lives in Machil sector and another died in Naugam sector in Kupwara on Monday and Tuesday. Five civilians, including a villager and his two sons, were killed in Ganderbal district in central Kashmir on Monday night. (UNI)
