Former J&K CMs under ‘house arrest’

Former Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah, and People’s Conference Chief Sajad Lone, were placed under house arrest after midnight on Sunday. The unprecedented lockdown of the prominent leaders of Jammu and Kashmir that follows a massive security build-up in the State. The house arrest of these leaders were announced soon after the Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik held a late-night meeting with top officials. The news of house arrest came out after Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah tweeted they had been placed under house arrest.

Mobile internet and phone connections have been blocked in many places and public meetings or rallies have been banned in Srinagar and parts of the state. The rapid escalation of security measures fueled speculation about plans to modify the special status granted to the state under the constitution. But at the same time, Governor of Jammu Kashmir, Army and Indian Government had told that unprecedented built up of defence force in Jammu and Kashmir was due to terror threat from Pakistan.

Now all eyes are on on a cabinet meeting at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence this morning. PM Modi also had a one-on-one meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah ahead of the cabinet meeting. Shah is expected to make a statement on Jammu and Kashmir in parliament today.
