Jammu, Jun 10: District and Sessions Court, Pathankot, on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment mastermind Sanji Ram and two others in the infamous Kathua gangrape case in which an eight-year-old girl was raped and murdered in Rasana village of tehsil Hiranagar in Kathua district.
The Court slapped life imprisonment on mastermind Sanjhi Ram along with two others, Deepak Khajuria and Parvesh Kumar.
All three have to undergo lifer vis-a-vis punishment awarded under various sections and Rs 50,000 fine.
Sub Inspector of J&K Police, Anand Ditta, Constables Surinder Kumar and Tilak Raj were sentenced to five years jail and a fine of Rs 50,000 for destroying evidence.
The convicts can file an appeal within 30 days at Haryana High Court.
Earlier in the day, the court had convicted six accused persons in the judgement of the case pronounced almost after 17 months of the incident.
The Court convicted Sanji Ram, who was believed to be the mastermind in the case and priest of the Devsthan in village Rasana at Hiranagar in Kathua district.
Other accused persons convicted were Deepak Khajuria, Surinder Joshi, Head Constable Tilak Raj, Anand Dutta and Pravesh.
Vishal Jalgotra, son of Sanjhi Ram has been acquitted on benefit of doubt.
Out of six, four were convicted under section 201 of IPC (Destruction of evidence).
Vishal Jalgotra was given benefit of doubt as it was reported that he was in Meerut to appear in examination at the time of incident.
Over 100 witnesses gave testimony. The trial was shifted outside the state after Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch arrested the accused persons.
An eight-yr-old girl of Rasana Mohara, Hiranagar, district Kathua was abducted on January 10, 2018 and her body was found a week later.
Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti welcomed the judgment on micro-blogging site Twitter.
