Srinagar, May 18: Three militants were killed by security forces in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Pulwama district of north Kashmir on Saturday, official sources said.
They said troops of Rashitriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation at Panzgam, Awantipora, in Pulwama in the wee hours following a tip-off about the presence of militants. However, when the security forces were sealing the village and moving towards a particular area, militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons, they said, adding that fire was returned and in the encounter two militants were killed.
They said when the security forces again launched searches in the area, there was fresh firing. Security forces returned the fire and killed the third militant.
Bodies of all the three militants were recovered and operation ended, they said, adding people have been urged not to go near the encounter site till searches are completed. Meanwhile, mobile internet service has been suspended in Pulwama as a precautionary measure to prevent rumours. UNI
