Omar, Mehbooba welcome India-Saudi joint statement on dialogue with Pak

Agency News

Srinagar, Feb 21 : Welcoming India-Saudi joint statement to create suitable conditions for talks with Pakistan, former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said it has vindicated their stand on holding dialogue with the neighbouring country.

“I’m glad to see the Modi government acknowledge what some of us in J&K have been saying all along - dialogue is the only way forward & for that India & Pakistan will have to work to create the right environment,” Mr Abdullah, who is the National Conference (NC) vice-president, wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.

He said when Government of India acknowledges the need to create suitable conditions for dialogue and that too in a statement with a third country, this is suddenly the height of patriotism and nationalism.

“The India-Saudi joint statement talks about “creating conditions for the resumption of the comprehensive dialogue with Pakistan”. When some of us say this, we are called anti-national & Pakistani agents in various TV studios,” he said.

Taking to twitter, Ms Mufti, who is the president of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said, “Amid the din & clamour for war, India-Saudi joint statement on creating conditions conducive for talks between (between) Pak & India is a welcome step. Message for war mongers is loud & clear. Also, by promising investment in both nations, MBS surely knows the art of keeping everyone happy.”

The India-Saudi joint statement was issued after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with oil-rich kingdom's Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman. The joint statement laid stress on the importance of ‘good neighbouring relations’ and ‘agreed on the need for creation of conditions necessary for resumption of the comprehensive dialogue between India and Pakistan’.

Earlier, Ms Mufti said she failed to understand the outrage over her statement cautioning against any armed confrontation between India and Pakistan. “Unable to understand the outrage over my statement today. Anybody with half a brain wouldn't advocate war especially between two countries that are nuclear powers. All the TV anchors yelling for war, I suggest you pack your bags and join our troops at the borders,” she wrote on twitter.

“BJP Minister from Uttarakhand wants to slap an FIR against PDP leaders who travelled to Dehradun to comfort & facilitate travel back home for students in panic. Instead of initiating action against goons responsible, he wants to punish innocent Kashmiris. #Shame,” she added. (UNI)
