Srinagar, Feb 12 : Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Bashiruddin Farooqi passed away early Tuesday in a local hospital following a brief illness, official sources said.
He was 83.
Meanwhile, former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have condoled the demise.
The Mufti breathed his last at S K Institute of Medical Institute (SKIMS) at 03: 00 hrs.
His “Nimaz Jinazah” will be performed in the afternoon at Khanqah-e-Moula, Srinagar.
Taking to micro-blogging site twitter, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba said, “Sad to learn about passing away of Mufti Bashiruddin saheb. In him Kashmir lost a respected religious scholar and thought leader. Allah Maghfirat karey. Stand in solidarity with the family and followers of Mufti sahib.
Vice-president of National Conference (NC) Omar said, “Inna lilahi wa inna illahi rajiuun. Allah Mufti Bashir-ud-Din Sb ko Jannat naseeb karen. My condolences to the family at this time of great personal loss’.
Meanwhile, religious, social and political organisations have also condoled the demise of Grand Mufti, who used to announce the beginning of Holy month of Ramzan and Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha apart from issuing Fatwa on different religious matters.(UNI)
