Srinagar, Feb 8 : Seven bodies were recovered while three policemen were rescued alive on Friday from a snow avalanche that hit a police post at Jawahar Tunnel on Srinagar-Jammu national highway in south Kashmir on Thursday.
Official sources said that a snow avalanche hit a police post at Jawahar Tunnel on Thursday following heavy snowfall. “Ten people -- including six policemen, two fire service personnel and two prisoners -- were buried alive under several feet of snow,” they said.
They said a search operation was immediately launched to rescue the trapped persons.
“Three policemen, who were buried under several feet of snow, were rescued alive in a critical condition. They injured were immediately taken to a hospital,” they said.
They said seven bodies were also recovered under several feet of snow near the tunnel. “The operation is over and the identity of the deceased persons is being ascertained,” they added. (UNI)
