Fresh WD will result in rain & snow in Kashmir from Tuesday

Srinagar, Feb 3 : Though weather remained dry during the past 24 hours due to which mercury witnessed a surge, the sun was playing hide and seek in the Kashmir valley on Sunday, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay foundation stone of several development projects.

A fresh Western Disturbance (WD), originating in Arabian sea and entering the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan, will touch the region on February 5 which will remain active till February 7 in Jammu and Kashmir.

People continued to shiver in Ladakh region, where Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, recorded drop in the minimum temperature and settled at minus 22 degree against yesterday's minus 21.4 degree. Leh and border town of Kargil also witnessed drop and settled at minus 12 degree and minus 16.4 degree minimum temperature respectively. All water bodies remained frozen.

A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon the weather will remain dry during the next 24 hours in the state. However, scattered to widespread rain or snow could occur during the subsequent two days.

There could be widespread rain and snow from February 5 to 7 in the Kashmir valley, he said, adding this would follow isolated rain and snow.

The minimum temperature also witnessed surge in summer capital, where Mr Modi is scheduled to inaugurate and lay foundation stone of various projects, meet sarpanchs and panchs besides students from different states at S K International Conference Centre (SKICC) on the bank of Dal Lake Sunday afternoon.

Against yesterday's minus 0.4 degree, the minimum temperature on Sunday was 1.2 degree which was about two degree above normal, the spokesman said.

The sky would be generally cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 6 degree and one degree respectively in Srinagar during the next 24 hours. There was also improvement in the minimum temperature elsewhere in the valley.

The world famous health resort of Pahalgam recorded minus 9.2 degree minimum temperature against yesterday’s minus 9.2 degree, about 2.5 notches below normal. At Gulmarg, famed ski resort the minimum temperature was minus 7 degree against minus 10.5 degree recorded on Sunday.

The minimum temperature was minus 1.2 degree in Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir, Kokernag minus 1 degree and Kupwara minus 2.3 degree.(UNI)
