Srinagar, Oct 11: PhD Scholar-turned-militant Mannan Wani was among two militants killed in a fierce encounter that ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) launched by security forces in the frontier district of Kupwara on Thursday.
Spontaneous shutdown was observed in Kupwara and Baramulla districts as the news of the death of Wani, who was a PhD scholar in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) before picking up the gun in January 2018, spread in the valley. Separatists have also called for a general strike on Friday against the killing of Wani and the other militant.
Meanwhile, the district authorities have suspended mobile internet service besides ordered suspension of class work in educational institutions as a precautionary measure in Kupwara.
Official sources said that following specific information about the presence of militants, troops of Army, Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation in village Shatgund Handwara in north Kashmir district of Kupwara at 0230 hrs.
“All exit points were sealed to prevent militants to escape from the area,” they said, adding when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village with the first light this morning, militants hiding there, opened fire with automatic weapons.
Security forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter, they said, adding two militants were killed in the exchange of fire.
They said the slain militants have been identified as Mannan Wani, who joined militant ranks in January this year, and Ashiq. (UNI)
