Ottawa, Jun 5 : Canada’s unemployment rate reached a historic high of 13.7 per cent in May as the economy continues to suffer amidst the COVID-19 pandemic said Statistics Canada in its jobs report for the month of May released on Friday.
Statistics Canada said in its Labor Force Survey report that the unemployment rate stood at 13.7 per cent for the month of May, a sharp rise from 5.6 per cent in February. Sputnik quoted the report stating that the Canadian economy added 2,89,600 jobs in May with 2,92,000 resuming their normal work hours, attaining a recovery of 10.6 percent of those who lost their employment or had their hours cut throughout March and April. Statistics Canada had announced last week that the Canadian economy contracted by 8.2 percent during the first quarter of 2020. (UNI)
