Geneva, Jun 2 : The Director General of the World Health Organization(WHO) Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus has appreciated US contribution to the WHO and indirectly urged US President Donald Trump to reconsider his decision to pull out of the UN agency. Kyodo news agency quoted Dr Tedros appreciating US's contribution to the WHO at a press conference on Monday.
"The world has long benefited from the strong, collaborative engagement with the government and the people of the United States...It is WHO's wish for this collaboration to continue...The US government and people's contribution and generosity towards global health over many decades has been immense, and it has made a great difference in public health all around the world". On May 29, President Trump announced that the United States will sever its ties with the WHO, labelling the organization a Chinese "puppet" and criticizing it for propagating Beijing's "misinformation" about the start of the pandemic in China.
The US pull out from the WHO would be a bit of a financial challenge for the Geneva-based agency as the US was the top contributor to it in 2018 and 2019, extending USD 893 million in total, which means about 15 percent of the UN agency's funding. Prior to the May 29 announcement, the American president had declared that he would permanently freeze US funding of the WHO and reconsider US membership unless it made a commitment within the next 30 days to carry out major reforms.
