Afghanistan reports 580 new coronavirus cases, total crosses 13,000

Kabul, May 28 : The Afghan Ministry of Public Health on Thursday reported that 580 new positive cases of COVID-19 have been detected across the country in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases in Afghanistan to 13,036.

A breakup of the cases is as follows, in Kabul (322), Herat (139), Panjshir (27), Balkh (22), Farah (21), Paktia (20), Faryab (15) and Parwan(14). In the ensuing period 8 COVID-19 patients died, taking the death toll in the country to 235. The number of patients who have recovered from the virus stands at 1,209.

Data by the Ministry of Public Health indicates there are 11,572 known active cases of COVID-19 in the country. The Ministry of Public Health said that it has so far tested 34,936 samples. Deputy Minister of Health Wahid Majroh at a press conference said that 40 percent of the total COVID-19 cases were reported in the past ten days. Majroh also said that the ministry is fast running out of medical supplies and there is an urgent need for face masks, ventilators and other necessary equipment. (UNI)
