Geneva, Switzerland, May 19 : World Health Organization(WHO) members on Tuesday agreed to an independent investigation into the UN agency's Coronavirus response in the face of heavy US concerns regarding its management of the pandemic. The nations of the world who made a virtual participation in the 73rd World Health Assembly adopted the resolution urging a joint response to the crisis. The resolution which was tabled by the European Union calls for a probe into "the actions of WHO and their time-lines pertaining to the Covid-19 pandemic".

The United States also supported this resolution despite the fact that it has been critical of the WHO, accusing it of being under Chinese influence. WHO chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has also welcomed the call for a review though he insisted there exists no need for a dramatic overhaul of the organisation. Dr Ghebreyesus stressed that the world right now needs to strengthen agencies such as WHO for effectively meeting the challenge posed by the pandemic "strengthen, implement and finance the systems and organisations it has — including WHO".
