Washington, Apr 20: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday expressed its displeasure over the arrest of Hong Kong pro democracy activists by the country's administration.
"The United States condemns the arrest of pro-democracy advocates in Hong Kong. Beijing and its representatives in Hong Kong continue to take actions inconsistent with commitments made under the Sino-British Joint Declaration that include transparency, the rule of law, and guarantees that Hong Kong will continue to “enjoy a high degree of autonomy", Pompeo said. On Saturday the South China Morning Post reported the arrest of at least 15 opposition members and pro democracy activists in Hong Kong which included veteran politicians, a publishing tycoon and senior barristers. Hong Kong saw large scale anti government protests starting middle of 2019 which were triggered by an extradition bill which has now been aborted. (UNI)
