As the global number of coronavirus cases races toward 2 million, Spain also saw a surge in cases on Wednesday. The Spanish Health Ministry reported 4,978 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, marking the largest increase in more than a week. Health officials report more than 177,630 COVID-19 cases in Spain.
The country had begun seeing a slight decline in deaths recently and a slower rate of new cases, bringing some hope that the worst of the pandemic there was over. On Tuesday, Spain saw its first ever decrease in active cases and the number of deaths, and recovered people outnumbered new cases.
Officials report 523 deaths over the past 24 hours, one of the lowest increases in the past three weeks. More than 18,570 people have died in the country.
