Macron takes China's COVID-19 statistics with a pinch of salt

Agency News

Paris, Apr 17: French President Emmanuel Macron has suggested that discrepancy between Europe and China with regards to free flow of information has put into question mark over Beijing's claimed success in containing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Financial Times quoted Macron pointing out the lack of transparency in China "there are clearly things that have happened [in China] that we don’t know about.” The French President did not agree with the view that China has had more success than Europe at handling the Covid-19 pandemic. “Given these differences, the choices made and what China is today, which I respect, let’s not be so naive as to say it’s been much better at handling this,” he was quoted as saying in an interview on Thursday.

Macron also did not agree with the view that policies that limit individual freedoms ought to be adopted by Europe calling these as "unacceptable" although some EU member states have made that choice "We can’t accept that. You can’t abandon your fundamental DNA on the grounds that there is a health crisis,” he argued. (UNI)
