Israel President asks Parliament to choose Prime Minister

Agency News

Tel Aviv, Apr 16: Israel's president on Thursday gave Israeli parliament, the Knesset, three weeks time to choose a new Prime Minister, warning that if they failed to do so he would have no choice but to call an unprecedented fourth consecutive election in just over a year.

President Reuven Rivlin was forced to make the move after his prime minister-designate, former military chief Benny Gantz, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to reach a power-sharing deal by the midnight deadline.

Although the deadline has passed, Netanyahu's Likud and Gantz's Blue and White party said they would continue their negotiations toward forming an "emergency" unity government meant to steer the country through the coronavirus crisis, an Al Jazeera report said. (UNI)
