Amid Covid-19 tragedy, tornadoes wreak havoc in US south, kill over 30

Washington, Apr 14: As a backlash to the people of US who are tired of their battle against Covid 19, powerful tornadoes ripped through different states in US South in which at least more than 30 lost their lives, authorities have said. There were more than 60 reports of tornadoes.

The tornadoes hit Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South and North Carolinas and Tennessee, reports Xinhua news agency. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said Monday that at least 11 people had been killed there, while the death toll in South Carolina was nine and that of Georgia was seven.

Gov. Henry McMaster said on Monday afternoon that the powerful storms that ripped through the state overnight killed at least nine people in South Carolina. The Hampton County Emergency Management Agency reported five people were killed in the county. At least three of the deaths were in Nixville, South Carolina, the National Weather Service reported. At least 20 people had to be taken to hospitals and more than 150 structures were damaged or destroyed in Hamilton County, which surrounds Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency confirmed at least 11 people had been killed there: four in Jefferson Davis County, two in Jones, two in Lawrence, and one each in Carroll, Panola and Walthall counties. Earlier Monday, at least seven people were killed and almost two dozen were hurt when storms tore through Murray County on the Georgia-Tennessee border.UNI
