Casualties feared as oil pipeline explodes in Nigeria

Lagos, Mar 15 : An oil pipeline exploded in the Abule Ado area of Amuwo Odofin local government area of Lagos state on Sunday. National news channel TVC News reported that the explosion occurred around 0700 hrs (GMT). Many buildings have reportedly collapsed in an incident that saw its impact being felt as far as fifteen kilometres away. Eyewitnesses say it may have been caused by the activities of vandals though no casualty figure has been disclosed.

However, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has aired speculations over the incident. Acting Coordinator in Lagos Territorial Office of NEMA Mr Ibrahim Farinloye confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the blast that occurred in the morning is not related to pipeline vandalism. Farinloye speculated that the blast took place at a factory in Abule Ado area. Farinloye confirmed that many buildings were affected and some even collapsed by the explosion which was heard several kilometres away but reassured that the situation is under control.(UNI)
