Italy in complete lockdown as coronavirus deaths rise in the country

Rome, Mar 10: Italy on Tuesday extended its emergency coronavirus measures, including travel restrictions and a complete ban on public gatherings, across the entire country.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte in a TV address to the nation said that "The coronavirus threat was real and that there is no more time". He ordered people to stay home and said that people will have to first seek permission for absolutely essential travel.

The number of people who have succumbed to coronavirus in Italy rose from 366 to 463 on Monday, thus becoming the second worst-hit country after China, even as the outbreak spread to 20 regions in the country.

The number of confirmed infections also increased by 24% from Sunday, official figures showed. All sporting events - including football matches - have been suspended across the country and all schools and universities will remain closed until 3 April, a BBC report said. UNI
