Washington Jan 13: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday spoke to the French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and discussed their efforts in Iraq to counter Iran’s 'malign activities' in the region.
"French Minister JY_LeDrian and I just discussed the importance of continued U.S. and European efforts to combat ISIS in Iraq as well as our cooperation to counter Iran’s malign activities,” Pompeo tweeted.
US state department, in a statement, said that both leaders reiterated the requirement, purpose and resolve of the coalition’s military presence in Iraq to fight ISIS.
Tensions have escalated in the Gulf after US military killed General Qasem Soleimani, head of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force on January 3 and Iran retaliated by firing missiles at a US military base in Iraq.
