Iran orders probe, Ukraine wants compensation

Tehran, Jan 11 : Iran on Saturday voiced regret over the human error which caused the tragic crash of Ukraine Airlines plane killing 176 people and ordered an investigation into the air disaster.

President Hassan Rouhani expressed regret ond said those who committed such an unpardonable mistake will be sued and investigated.

"In an atmosphere of threats and intimidation by the aggressive American regime against the Iranian nation after the martyrdom of General Qasem Soleimani, and in order to defend ourselves against possible attacks by the American Army, the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran were on full alert, unfortunately leading to this terrible catastrophe which claimed lives of dozens of innocent people because of human error and an erroneous shooting," Rouhani said in a statement.

"My thoughts and prayers go to all the mourning families. I offer my sincerest condolences," Irna quoted him as saying. He stressed that the tragic event is not an issue that cannot be put aside easily.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei ordered an investigation asking the General Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces to take necessary measures to probe the incident and make sure such events will not be repeated.

A Ukraine Airlines aircraft crashed in southern Tehran on Wednesday. All 176 people aboard, including nine crew members, lost their lives. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he expects a full investigation, a full admission of guilt and compensation from Iran.(UNI)
