Athens, Jan 11 : At least 12 migrants met watery grave on Saturday, when their boat sank 13 nautical miles southwest of Paxos island in western Greece. According to Greece Coast Guard, their vessels have so far rescued 21 people.
A spokesperson for the Coast Guard said that initial reports have suggested that 50 people were on board. However, there was no confirmation on the exact number of migrants on board. Four merchant ships, six coast guard ships and a helicopter were called in to search the area for more survivors.
Authorities said someone from the boat had called the 112 emergency number at 9:15 am (local time), the Greek City Times reported. There are no further details about the migrants, he added. (UNI)
