Chicago, Nov 26 : A 19-year-old Indian-American student of the University of Illinois was sexually assaulted and strangulated to death, campus police said.

The assailant has been arrested. The girl, Ruth George, was found in the back seat of a family owned vehicle after her phone pinged to a parking garage on Halsted Street on campus, American Broadcasting Company (ABC) News reported quoting the police. Investigators believe the death of the Hyderabad-origin student was a result of foul play, campus Police Chief Kevin Booker said in a statement.

"George's family reported to campus police on Saturday around 11am (local time) that they had not heard from her since the night before," Booker said. The assailant, Donald Thurman (26), who has a criminal history, was arrested on Sunday from a Chicago metro station. He is not associated with the university. On Monday, he was formally charged with first-degree murder and aggravated sexual assault for killing George.

According to the university, George was a sophomore and Kinesiology major. "We offer our sincere condolences to the student’s family and friends and I know that all of us have them in our hearts as they struggle with this devastating loss," UIC community Chancellor Michael D Amiridis said. (UNI)
