Colombo, Nov 22: Dinesh Gunawardena was given the key post of Minister of Foreign Affairs in the 16-member interim Cabinet Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa appointed on Friday.
The new Cabinet will be in place till the next parliamentary election.
"I congratulate the new members of the cabinet. Together with the interim cabinet that was just appointed until the Parliamentary Election, we look forward to serving all Sri Lankans," Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said in a statement on his official twitter account soon after the new cabinet took oaths.
Gunawardena, president of Mahajana Eksath Perumuna is a trade unionist; human rights activist and journalist.
The new Government has decided to follow a neutral foreign policy and maintain friendly relations with all countries.
The new prime minister was appointed as the minister of Finance, Economic Affairs and Policy Development.
The eldest of the Rajapaksa brothers, Chamal Rajapaksa was named the Minister of Trade and Food Security.
Among the other ministers are two from the minority Tamil community who come from the central tea plantations areas of Tamils of Indian origin.and the Tamil dominated north -- Arumugam Thondaman, Minister of Community Empowerment and Estate Infrastructure, and Douglas Devananda, Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
The new cabinet was appointed two days after former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe quit his post after ruling party candidate Sajith Premadasa was defeated by Gotabaya Rajapaksa in a presidential election held last Saturday. (UNI)
