MOSCOW, Oct 8 : One security officer was killed and four were wounded amid anti-government protests in Baghdad's suburb — Sadr City, — the Joint Operations Command of Iraqi Forces said Tuesday in a statement.
"During the protection of the municipal council, the court and demonstrators were near al Mudhaffar square with unarmed forces. While near the protesters, the forces were subjected to heavy gunfire that resulted in the death of one of the unarmed forces' members, and wounded four others, including two military officers," the statement read.
At least 15 people were reportedly killed in violent clashes in the suburb on Sunday evening. Police used tear gas and bullets against the protesters. The protests against poor public services, high unemployment and rampant corruption have been ongoing since last week. (SPUTNIK)
