Dhaka, Sep 29 : Over 2,000 families were affected by the flash flood in Sadar thana and Shibganj upazilas of northern Bangladesh's Chapainowabgonj district due to the rise of water level in the Padma and the Mahananda rivers.
Syed Sahidul Alam Zila, Executive Engineer of local Water Development Board office, on Sunday said, "The water level in the Padma River started to increase 10/12 days ago due to onrush of hill water from India."
The water level in the Padma river increased by 5cm and that of Mahananda river by 10
cm in the last 24 hours, he added.
Low-lying areas of Narayanpur, Alatuli, Shahajahanpur, Charanupur, Debinagar of Sadar upazila and Paka, Durlovpur and Monakosha areas of Shibganjupazila were submerged due to the flash flood, he said.
Zila Agriculture Office sources said at least 6,280 hectares of winter vegetables destroyed in Shibganj, Bholahat and Sadar upazilas’ river bank areas.(UNI)
