Trump’s envoy for Ukraine steps down

Agency News

Giving a setback to Democrats’ move to get a testimony from Volker as part of impeachment investigation of Trump, Kurt Volker, Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, has stepped down, reported Bloomberg on Saturday.

Quoting two people familiar with the matter Bloomberg reported: “Volker, a veteran diplomat who took the envoy position as a volunteer, informed the State Department on Friday that he was leaving, said the two people, who asked for anonymity to discuss the matter.”

One of the sources who spoke to NBC News said that stepping down as special representative will allow Volker to be freer in what he can say should he be called to testify before Congress about the Trump administration and Ukraine.

Congressional Democrats are conducting an impeachment investigation of Trump and have sought testimony from Volker relating to a July 25 phone call in which Trump encouraged Ukraine’s president to investigate Democrats.
