Agency News

United Nations, Sep 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his hectic visit to the US that will take him to Houston and New York, will gift a solar power plant to the UN and be present at the unveiling ceremony of a special UN stamp on the occasion of 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

India's Chief Representative to the UN, Syed Akbaruddin, who briefed the news media on Thursday on the eve of Modi’s visit, said the Gandhi Solar Park to be formally inaugurated on September 24 had cost about 1-million dollars.

The park will generate 50 kilowatts of “green” electricity to power the UN headquarters in New York. The park has been installed on the roof of a building with a view of the city’s skyline on the background.

On the same day, the stamp will be released in the presence of six other world leaders who include Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The leaders will speak on the relevance of Mahatma in present-day society.

Gandhi Peace Garden, coming up in the State University of New York on the Old Westbury campus, will be inaugurated by the prime minister remotely. He was originally scheduled to visit to open the garden, which is on nearby Long Island. (UNI)
