China warns protesters, backs Hong Kong leader

Agency News

Hong Kong, Jul 29 : China on Monday said the protests in Hong Kong have gone beyond the scope of peaceful march and demonstration and undermined the rule of law and stability of “one country, two system” while reiterating support for chief executive Carrie Lam as well as the city's police.

After another weekend of protests and confrontations between the police and protesters, the government asked Hong Kong people to oppose violence as it has caused serious damage to the city's international image and economy.

Millions of people have taken to the streets in the last two months to protest against the controversial extradition Bill, that would have allowed people to be extradited from the city to stand trial in mainland China.

There were violent clashes on Sunday as police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to drive back protesters blocking Hong Kong streets with road signs and umbrellas.
