Colombo, Jul 2: Sri Lanka's former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara were arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department on Tuesday on charges of negligence of duties during the April 21 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks that killed 250 people in the island.
While Jayasundara was arrested at the Police Hospital in which he was admitted, Fernando was arrested from the National Hospital.
Attorney General Dappula de Livera on Monday had written to the acting police chief asking him to bring charges against his predecessor and the former defence secretary.
“There is sufficient information to prove negligence of official duties ... and criminal negligence. It is also considered a grave crime against humanity under international law,” the government's official news portal quoted as saying in the letter.
The attorney general also asked the acting IGP to produce the duo before courts. (UNI)
